About Mealworm Frass Fertilizer

  • Nutrition

A natural, balanced source of primary nutrients (NPK), as well as essential micronutrients like calcium, magnesium and zinc. All of this gives your plants nutrients to make them grow and be healthy.

  • Immunity

In addition to nutritious mealworm waste, frass contains the exoskeletons shed by mealworms as they grow. These exoskeletons contain chitin, which acts like a vaccine and triggers a natural immune response in your plants, as if they’re being “attacked” by insects. This activates plant hormones that provide insect resistance, strengthening cell walls and releasing natural toxins increase plant defense against pests like root nematodes and diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot.

Put simply, mealworm frass makes your plants stronger.

  •  Soil Health - Humus Booster

As a form of organic matter, frass improves soil structure, aeration, and moisture retention. It also feeds beneficial soil microbes, which help make nutrients more available to plants.

  • Sustainability

As a product naturally generated by the life-cycle of mealworms, Mealworm Frass Fertiliser is a completely organic, environmentally sustainable and pH neutral “closed-loop” fertiliser offering. Unlike synthetic fertilisers, natural frass is safe to use on all plants such as Australian natives and will not “burn” them.

Simple to Use

As a Soil Pre-Mix: Mix into your potting soil or garden bed before planting. We recommend 1 tablespoon per 2 litres of soil, or for native plants, 1 tablespoon per 3 litres.

As a Top Dressing: Sprinkle a small amount around the base of established plants (e.g., 1 tablespoon per plant) and water it in.

As a Liquid Feed (Frass "Tea"): Steep the frass in water (e.g., 4 teaspoons per 4 litres of water), let it sit for a few hours, then use the water as a soil drench or a foliar (leaf) spray.

For Transplanting: Add a small pinch of frass directly into the planting hole beneath the roots to promote root development.

For Australian Natives: Sprinkle around the drip line of the plants at the time of planting, and re-apply every month or so, increasing to fortnightly in warmer months for an additional boost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mealworm Frass Fertiliser safe around children/animals, and for edible plants?

Yes. Mealworms are non-toxic, and our mealworm frass is 100% natural, and chemical free.

How does Mealworm Frass Fertiliser compare to other fertilisers like manure or blood & bone?

Unlike some other animal-based fertilisers, mealworm frass is virtually odourless, doesn’t need composting, and won’t burn plant roots.

What’s the benefit of mealworm frass over worm frass?

Unlike mealworms, worms have no exoskeleton, which means their frass lacks the chitin that is so powerful in promoting plant pest-immunity and resistance.

How does mealworm frass boost plant immunity?

The mealworm exoskeletons contained in the frass effectively “trick” your plants into thinking they’re being attacked by insects. The chitin in the exoskeletons trigger a hormonal response in your plants to defend themselves. This means that if pests, parasites and diseases come along to feed on your plants, those plants will have their defences ready.

Where does all your mealworm frass come from?

Right here, on Australia’s largest insect farm! Our family has been raising and supplying feeder insects like mealworms for animal owners around the country for over 35 years. Mealworm frass is a totally natural zero-waste byproduct of mealworm farming that we’re able to sustainably recycle into nutritious plant fertiliser.
